Whether you are laying a new driveway, creating a drainage field, or simply sprucing up a garden bed, aggregates like gravel, crushed stone, and sand are foundational materials. However, ordering them can be tricky. They are sold by weight (tons) but your project is measured in volume (length x width x depth). Our Gravel Calculator bridges this gap, ensuring you don't end up with a half-finished driveway or a massive pile of leftover rocks.

Why Do We Measure in Yards and Order in Tons?

This is the most common point of confusion in landscaping Construction.

  • Your Project is Volume: You have a space to fill. A hole, a trench, or a driveway surface. This is measured in cubic measurements (Cubic Feet or Cubic Yards).
  • The Quarry Sells Weight: Heavy trucks are weighed on scales. It is much easier to weigh a truck before and after loading than to try and measure the volume of an irregular pile of rocks. Therefore, quarries sell by the Ton.

To convert between the two, you need the Density of the material. A cubic yard of feathers weighs very little; a cubic yard of lead weighs a lot. Gravel sits somewhere in the middle.

Standard Densities of Common Materials

While density changes slightly based on moisture content and rock type (limestone vs granite), here are the industry standards used for estimation:

  • Standard Gravel / Crushed Stone (Item #4, 57 Stone): ~1.4 tons per cubic yard (2800 lbs).
  • Sand: ~1.35 tons per cubic yard (2700 lbs). Wet sand is heavier.
  • Pea Gravel: ~1.25 tons per cubic yard. The round stones pack less tightly than crushed jagged stones.
  • Mulch: Much lighter, typically ~0.3 to 0.5 tons per cubic yard depending on moisture.

How to Calculate Manually

If you didn't have our calculator, here is the math you would do:

Step 1: Calculate Volume in Cubic Feet

Multiply Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft).
Note: Convert depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12.
Example: A 20ft x 10ft driveway, 3 inches deep.
3 inches = 3/12 = 0.25 ft.
Volume = 20 × 10 × 0.25 = 50 cubic feet.

Step 2: Convert to Cubic Yards

There are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard (3x3x3).
50 / 27 = 1.85 cubic yards.

Step 3: Convert to Tons

Multiply cubic yards by the density (e.g., 1.4 for gravel).
1.85 × 1.4 = 2.59 Tons.

Choosing the Right Material

Different projects require different stones:

  • Crushed Stone #57: The gold standard for driveway bases and drainage. Inspects are roughly 1 inch in size and jagged, so they lock together.
  • Pea Gravel: Small, round, smooth stones. Beautiful for walking paths or patios but terrible for driveways because they roll like marbles and don't compact. Cars will sink in them.
  • Stone Dust / Screenings: Very fine crushed stone. Used as a final base layer for pavers to sit on because it compacts into a hard, flat surface.
  • Rip Rap: Large chunks of rock (6-12 inches). Used for erosion control on steep banks or in ditches.

Tips for Ordering

  • The "Fluff" Factor: When dirt or gravel is dug up or dumped, it is "fluffed" with air. When you compact it (driving on it or using a plate compactor), it shrinks. Always order 5-10% extra to account for compaction and settling.
  • Truck Sizes:
    • Single Axle Dump Truck: Carries ~5-7 tons.
    • Tandem Axle Dump Truck: Carries ~12-16 tons.
    • Tri-Axle / Super Dump: Carries ~18-22 tons.
    Knowing this helps you understand delivery fees. If you need 8 tons, a single axle might need two trips (doubling the delivery fee), while a tandem can do it in one.
  • Spread Depth: For a new driveway, you typically want at least 4-6 inches of compacted stone base. For "top dressing" an existing driveway to look fresh, 1-2 inches is usually sufficient.
