Understanding eDPI (Effective Dots Per Inch)

In the world of competitive gaming, particularly in First-Person Shooters (FPS) like Valorant, Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), Apex Legends, and Overwatch, consistency is key. One of the biggest challenges players face is discussing and comparing mouse sensitivity. Because sensitivity depends on both the hardware setting (Mouse DPI) and the software setting (In-game Sensitivity), simply saying "my sensitivity is 2.0" is meaningless without knowing the DPI.

This is where eDPI comes in. eDPI stands for Effective Dots Per Inch. It is a universal value that combines both your hardware and software settings into a single number representing your "true" sensitivity.

How to Calculate eDPI

The formula for eDPI is incredibly simple but powerful:

eDPI = Mouse DPI × In-Game Sensitivity

For example, if Player A uses 400 DPI and 2.0 in-game sensitivity, their eDPI is 800.

If Player B uses 800 DPI and 1.0 in-game sensitivity, their eDPI is also 800.

Despite having different settings, both players have the exact same true sensitivity and would require the same amount of physical mouse movement to turn their character 360 degrees.

Why is eDPI Important?

Common eDPI Ranges by Game

Different games have different raw input handling and field of view (FOV) scales, meaning an eDPI of 800 in CS:GO is NOT the same as an eDPI of 800 in Overwatch or Apex Legends. Here is a breakdown of common ranges for popular titles:

Counter-Strike 2 (CS2) / CS:GO

DPI vs. Sensitivity: What's the Difference?

DPI (Dots Per Inch) is a hardware specification of your mouse sensor. It measures how many pixels the cursor moves on screen for every inch the mouse moves physically. High DPI means the cursor flies across the screen with little movement.

Sensitivity is a software multiplier applied by the game engine. It takes the rough input from the mouse (DPI counts) and translates it into camera rotation degrees.

There is a long-standing myth that higher DPI is always better. While modern sensors are very accurate at high DPIs (1600+), using extremely high DPI with extremely low in-game sensitivity can sometimes introduce jitter or smoothing. Conversely, extremely low DPI (like 200) can cause "pixel skipping" where the crosshair moves in visible steps rather than smoothly. The industry standard "safe zone" is generally 400, 800, or 1600 DPI.

How to Find Your Perfect eDPI

Finding the right eDPI is a personal journey. There is no "best" setting, but there is a "best for you."

  1. The 180-Degree Test: Place your mouse in the center of your mousepad. Move it to one edge. Your character should turn exactly 180 degrees (look behind). This ensures you can react to threats behind you without running out of mousepad space.
  2. The Tracking Test: Pick a fixed point on a wall (like a bullet hole). Strafe left and right while trying to keep your crosshair locked on that point. If your crosshair lags behind, your eDPI is too low. If it jitters ahead, it's too high.
  3. The PSA Method (Perfect Sensitivity Approximation): Start with a high and low sensitivity. Test the midpoint. Choose the half that felt better. Repeat until you narrow down to a precise value.
