Guide to DIY E-Liquid Mixing
Making your own e-liquid (DIY) allows you to customize flavors, nicotine strength, and PG/VG ratios exactly to your liking, often at a fraction of the cost of store-bought juice.
The Ingredients
- Propylene Glycol (PG): A thin, flavorless liquid that carries flavor well and provides "throat hit". Common in standard e-liquids. Density: approx 1.036 g/ml.
- Vegetable Glycerin (VG): A thick, sweet liquid that produces dense vapor clouds. Smoother on the throat. Density: approx 1.261 g/ml.
- Nicotine Base: Usually suspended in PG or VG at high concentrations (e.g., 100mg/ml). Handle with extreme care.
- Flavor Concentrates: These define the taste. Most are PG-based and very potent (used at 5-20%).
Safety First
Warning: Nicotine is a toxic substance. High strength nicotine (like 100mg/ml) can be
dangerous if spilled on skin.
- Always wear nitrile gloves and eye protection.
- Keep all supplies out of reach of children and pets.
- If spilled on skin, wash immediately with soap and water.
Mixing by Weight (Gravimetric) vs. Volume
Mixing by weight using a digital scale (accurate to 0.01g) is generally preferred over using syringes (volume) because:
- Cleanup: No syringes to wash, just drip directly into the bottle.
- Accuracy: Scales eliminate parallax errors and bubbles in syringes.
- Speed: Once you get the hang of it, mixing by weight is much faster.
