Feeding Your Dog the Right Amount

Obesity is the number one health problem in dogs today. Feeding your dog too much can shorten their lifespan by years, leading to joint issues, diabetes, and heart disease. Conversely, active dogs and growing puppies need plenty of fuel to thrive. This calculator uses the veterinary standard formula to estimate your dog's daily caloric needs, helping you keep them in peak condition.

How Caloric Needs Are Calculated

Veterinarians use a two-step process to determine how much a dog should eat:

1. Resting Energy Requirement (RER)

This is the energy your dog burns just by existing—breathing, pumping blood, and sleeping. It is determined solely by weight.

RER = 70 × (Weight in kg)^0.75

2. Maintenance Energy Requirement (MER)

Since dogs don't just sleep all day, we multiply the RER by an "activity factor" to find their real daily need. This factor accounts for age, neuter status, and activity level.

Choosing the Right Activity Level

Be honest when selecting your dog's lifestyle!

Converting Calories to Food

Once you have your number (e.g., 900 kcal/day), check your dog food bag. It will list "kcal per cup" or "kcal per kg".

Example: If your food is 300 kcal/cup and your dog needs 900 kcal, feed them 3 cups per day.

Remember, treats count! Treats should make up no more than 10% of total daily calories.
