Cubic Inch Calculator
Calculate volume for small objects & engines.
Volume (Cubic Inches):
Small Scale, Big Impact: The Cubic Inch
While architects deal in cubic yards and shippers deal in cubic feet, mechanics and machinists live in the world of the Cubic Inch (in³ or CID). This unit is the standard for measuring precision volume in the US system.
1. Engine Displacement (CID)
For decades, American engines were defined by this number: the 302 Mustang, the 350 Chevy, the 426 Hemi.
The Math: An engine cylinder is just a cylinder.
Formula: `Volume = π × (Bore/2)² × Stroke × Num_Cylinders`
Note: Bore is the diameter, so we divide by 2 to get the radius.
2. Packaging Volume
Shipping small items? Carriers calculate "Dimensional Weight" based on cubic inches.
Formula: `L × W × H`
If a box is 12" x 12" x 12", it contains 1,728 cubic inches (which exactly equals 1 cubic foot).
3. Liquid Capacity
Sometimes you need to know how much liquid a container holds.
- 1 Gallon = 231 Cubic Inches
- 1 Liter = 61.02 Cubic Inches
Unit Conversion Cheat Sheet
- Inches to Millimeters: Multiply by 25.4
- Cubic Inches to Cubic Centimeters (cc): Multiply by 16.387
- Cubic Inches to Cubic Feet: Divide by 1,728
