Understanding Connecticut's Tax Rates
Unlike many states that have a patchwork of county and city taxes, Connecticut (CT) has a relatively uniform state-level sales tax system. However, the rate you pay depends heavily on what you are buying. Our calculator handles the standard rate plus the intricate "Exceptions" that trip up many shoppers.
1. The Standard Rate: 6.35%
This applies to the vast majority of tangible personal property sold in the state. If you walk into a
store and buy a toaster, a book, or a hammer, you are paying 6.35%.
Calculation: Price × 0.0635.
2. Meals and Beverages: 7.35%
In 2019, CT introduced a surcharge on "prepared meals." If you eat at a restaurant, grab a coffee, or buy a hot sandwich at a grocery store, you pay an extra 1%, bringing the total to 7.35%.
3. The Luxury Tax: 7.75%
Connecticut imposes a higher rate on items deemed "luxuries." This 7.75% rate kicks in for specific
thresholds:
- Motor Vehicles: Cars costing over $50,000.
- Jewelry: Items over $5,000.
- Clothing/Footwear: Items costing over $1,000 (handbags, dresses, suits).
4. Car Rentals: 9.35%
If you rent a passenger motor vehicle for a period of 30 days or less, you are subject to the Tourism and Surcharge tax total of 9.35%.
5. Exemptions (0%)
Some essential items are fully exempt from sales tax in CT:
- Most groceries (unprepared food).
- Prescription medicines.
- Children’s car seats.
- Bicycle helmets.
