Mastering Your Combat Level in Old School RuneScape
In the world of Gielinor, your Combat Level is more than just a number—it's your identity. It determines which monsters are aggressive towards you, what Slayer tasks you can receive, and which boats you can board at Pest Control. For Player vs. Player (PvP) enthusiasts, it defines the bracket of opponents you can attack in the Wilderness. Our OSRS Combat Level Calculator uses the precise algorithms from the game to help you plan your build, whether you are a Main, a Zerker, or a 1-Defence Pure.
This guide dives deep into the mathematics of combat levels, the different types of account builds, and strategies for optimizing your combat stats.
The Math Behind the Level
The maximum combat level in OSRS is 126. The formula is split into two parts: the "Base" calculation and the "Class" calculation.
1. Base Combat Stats
These stats contribute to your combat level regardless of whether you are a warrior, ranger, or mage:
Defence & Hitpoints: These are the heavyweights. Every level in Defence or HP
pushes your combat level up significantly.
Prayer: Prayer contributes less per level than Defence/HP, but it adds up
(roughly 1 combat level per 8 Prayer levels).
Base formula = 0.25 * (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer/2))
2. Class Combat Stats
The game looks at your offensive capabilities and takes the highest of the three:
Warrior (Melee): Attack + Strength.
Ranger: Ranged level (multiplied by 1.5).
Mage: Magic level (multiplied by 1.5).
The calculator identifies which "class" is dominant and uses that for the final calculation.
Understanding Account Builds
Because of how the formula works, players create specific "builds" to keep their combat level low
while maximizing damage.
1-Defence Pure: By keeping Defence at 1, these players have very low combat
levels but incredibly high Strength/Range/Magic, allowing them to hit high numbers against weaker
players in PvP.
Zerker (45 Def): Built around the Berserker Helm and Fighter Torso, offering a
balance of offense and defense.
70 Defence (Barrows/Piety): Access to high-tier armour like Barrows and the
Piety prayer, standard for high-level warring.
Why Calculate?
Quest Requirements: "Dream Mentor" requires 85 Combat. The "Western Provinces Diary"
requires 100 Combat.
Pest Control: The Veteran boat requires 100+ Combat for maximum points per
hour.
Wilderness Safety: Knowing your level helps you understand who can attack you
in deep wilderness.
Conclusion
Whether you are maximizing your XP rates or building the ultimate PK account, understanding the combat formula is essential. Use this tool to predict how your next few levels will affect your standing in the game.
