The Art of Arrow Building: Calculating Total Arrow Weight (TAW)

In archery, consistency is everything. If one arrow weighs 400 grains and another weighs 410 grains, they will impact the target at different heights, especially at longer distances. Knowing your exact Total Arrow Weight (TAW) is critical for sighting in your bow, selecting the right spine, and predicting kinetic energy. Whether you are building your own arrows or double-checking a pro shop's work, this calculator sums up the components to give you a precise weight in grains.

Anatomy of an Arrow's Weight

Calculating TAW involves adding up every single component attached to the shaft.

1. Shaft Weight (GPI):
Manufacturers list the Grains Per Inch (GPI) for every arrow shaft. To find the shaft weight, you multiply the cut length of the carbon/aluminum by the GPI.
Example: A 28-inch shaft at 9.0 GPI = 252 grains.

2. Point/Broadhead Weight:
This is the business end. Standard field points are usually 100 or 125 grains. Heavy metal setups might use 200+ grain broadheads.

3. Component Weight (Inserts/Outserts):
The metal piece glued into the front of the shaft that holds the point. Standard aluminum inserts weigh 12-20 grains, while heavy brass inserts can weigh 50-100 grains (used to boost FOC).

4. Nock & Fletching Weight:
These seemingly light parts add up.
- Nock: typically 8-12 grains.
- Fletchings: A standard 2-inch vane weighs about 6-7 grains. With 3 vanes, that's roughly 20 grains relative to the back of the arrow.
- Wraps: Vinyl wraps can add another 5-10 grains to the tail end.

Why TAW Matters

Speed vs. Kinetic Energy:
- Light Arrows (< 400 grains): Fly fast and flat. Great for 3D competitions where judging distance is tricky.
- Mid-Weight Arrows (400 - 500 grains): The standard for most whitetail hunters. A good balance of speed and penetration.
- Heavy Arrows (550+ grains): Slower flight, but massive momentum. Preferred by hunters targeting elk, moose, or dangerous game to ensure a pass-through.

Spine Considerations

Adding weight to the front of the arrow (point + insert) "weakens" the dynamic spine, meaning the arrow bends more upon release. Adding weight to the back (wraps + lighted nocks) "stiffens" the dynamic spine slightly. When building a custom arrow, calculating the TAW helps you double-check spine charts to ensure safety and accuracy.

Measurements: Inches vs. Carbon-to-Carbon

When measuring Arrow Length for this calculator, use the actual length of the shaft material itself (Carbon-to-Carbon). Do not include the nock or the point in the length measurement for the GPI calculation, as those have their own fixed weights provided in the other fields.
