Understanding Drywall Finishing Levels
Finishing drywall (taping and mudding) is where the real skill lies. The gypsum industry defines 5 distinct levels of finish, each affecting the cost and quality of the final wall.
Level Breakdown
- Level 0: No taping or finishing. Just the bare board hung on studs.
- Level 1 (Fire Taping): Tape is embedded in mud but not smoothed. Used in attics, hidden plenums, or service corridors where fire code is the only concern.
- Level 2: Tape embedded and one coat of mud over fasteners/bead. Rough. Suitable for garages or where water-resistant tile backer board is used.
- Level 3 (Texture Ready): One additional coat of mud. Joints are smooth but may show through gloss paint. The standard base for heavy textures (knockdown, popcorn).
- Level 4 (Standard Residential): Three coats of mud total. Sanded smooth. The industry standard for walls that will be painted with flat or eggshell paint.
- Level 5 (Skim Coat): The highest quality. Includes a thin "skim coat" of mud over the entire surface (not just joints). Required for gloss paints or critical lighting conditions to prevent "joint flashing."
Cost Factors
Finishing costs are typically quoted per square foot of wall surface area.
- Height: Ceilings higher than 8-10 feet usually incur a surcharge.
- Complexity: Arches, bullnose corners, and intricate angles increase labor cost.
- Region: Labor rates vary wildly. A Level 4 finish might cost $1.50/sq ft in rural areas but $3.00+/sq ft in major cities.
