Planning Your Drywall Project

Hanging drywall (or Sheetrock) is a fundamental skill for finishing interiors. Estimating accurately prevents mid-project trips to the hardware store or dealing with leftover heavy sheets.

Key Material Rules of Thumb

Sheets: Calculate total surface area and add 10-15% for waste (cuts and breakage).
- 4x8: Standard for DIY and 8ft ceilings. Easy to handle.
- 4x12: Best for long walls to minimize vertical seams (butt joints). Harder to transport.
Joint Compound ("Mud"):
- All-Purpose: Good for taping and finishing.
- Coverage: Roughly 0.053 lbs per sq ft. Approx one 4.5-gallon bucket (60 lbs) covers ~400-500 sq ft of wall for a standard finish.
Tape: Creating seamless joints requires paper or mesh tape. A 500ft roll goes a long way. Estimate ~1 ft of tape for ever 1 sq ft of board? No, more like 350-400 ft per 1000 sq ft of board.
Screws: Use 1-1/4" coarse thread screws for wood studs. Usage is roughly 1 screw per square foot of drywall.

Pro Tip: Install the ceiling first! Then push the wall sheets up tight against the ceiling sheets to help support the edge and create a clean corner.
