Deck Board Calculator: Plan Your Project to the Last Screw

There is an old joke on construction sites: "Go get the board stretcher." The punchline, of course, is that once a board is cut too short, it's garbage. When ordering expensive decking materials like pressure-treated pine, cedar, or composite (Trex), you want to order enough to finish the job but not so much that you waste hundreds of dollars. Our **Deck Board Calculator** helps you find that sweet spot.

How Deck Coverage Works

Calculating deck boards isn't as simple as dividing your total square footage by the area of a board. You have to account for two critical factors:

  1. The Gap: Deck boards are never installed tight against each other. They need a gap (usually 1/8" to 1/4") to allow for water drainage and wood expansion. Over the span of a large deck, these tiny gaps add up to "free" coverage.
  2. The "True" Width: A standard "2x6" or "5/4x6" deck board is not 6 inches wide. It is nominally 5.5 inches wide. If you calculate using 6 inches, you will run short.

The Formula

To determine how many rows of decking you need, the formula is:

Total Deck Depth ÷ (Board Width + Gap Size) = Number of Rows

Then multiply the number of rows by the width of the deck to get total linear feet, and divide by the length of boards you are buying (e.g., 12', 16').

The 10% Waste Rule

Professionals always add a waste factor, usually 10-15%. Why?

  • Bad Ends: Boards often come with splits or checks at the ends that need to be trimmed off.
  • Mistakes: You will cut a board wrong. It happens to the best of us.
  • Diagonal Cuts: If you are laying decking diagonally (at a 45-degree angle), your waste increases significantly (closer to 15-20%) because of the off-cuts at every joist.

Deck Board Size Chart

Nominal Size Actual Size Common Use
5/4 x 6 1.0" x 5.5" Standard Decking
2 x 6 1.5" x 5.5" Heavy Duty Decking / Docks
2 x 4 1.5" x 3.5" Railings / Handrails
