The Evolution of Army Fitness: From APFT to ACFT
For decades, the phrase "Army PT Test" meant one thing: The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT). It was a simple, three-event assessment consisting of two minutes of push-ups, two minutes of sit-ups, and a timed two-mile run. It was easy to administer, required zero equipment, and became the cultural standard of fitness for generations of soldiers. However, modern warfare has changed, and so has the Army's approach to physical readiness.
Why the APFT is Gone
The APFT was heavily biased toward muscular endurance and runners. It did not accurately measure the sheer strength and explosive power needed for combat tasks like extracting a casualty from a burning vehicle, lifting heavy ammo crates, or sprinting in short bursts under load. In 2020, the Army officially began the transition to the Army Combat Fitness Test (ACFT), a six-event comprehensive assessment designed to reduce injuries and improve combat lethality.
The New Standard: ACFT Breakdown
While some still search for "Army PT Calculator" expecting the old push-up/sit-up metrics, the current
standard of record is the ACFT.
1. Maximum Deadlift (MDL): Tests absolute strength.
2. Standing Power Throw (SPT): Tests explosive power.
3. Hand Release Push-Up (HRP): Tests upper body endurance with full range of motion.
4. Sprint-Drag-Carry (SDC): Tests anaerobic capacity and agility.
5. Plank (PLK): Tests core stability (replaced the sit-up/leg tuck).
6. Two-Mile Run (2MR): Tests aerobic endurance.
Is the APFT Still Used?
Generally, no. As of October 2022, the ACFT became the official test of record for all soldiers (Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard). However, understanding the legacy APFT scores is still useful for historical comparisons or for veterans tracking their former fitness levels. Some specialized schools or allied military partners may still use variations of the push-up/sit-up/run model.
Scoring the Difference
The scoring philosophy has also shifted.
- APFT: Had separate charts for Age and Gender. Scoring 300 (100 in each event) was the
gold standard.
- ACFT (Early Version): Was age and gender-neutral.
- ACFT (Current): Now incorporates age and gender-adjusted scales again, similar to the
APFT, to ensure fair competition for promotions while maintaining a baseline physical standard for
soldiering. The maximum score is 600.
How to Train for the New Era
If you are preparing for an Army PT test today, jogging and doing push-ups in your bedroom is no longer enough. You need access to weights (hex bar, bumper plates) and space to sprint. Functional fitness programs like CrossFit or tactical strength and conditioning are much more aligned with the new requirements than the old "daily dozen" calisthenics.
Passing Requirements
To pass, a soldier must score at least 60 points in each of the six events, for a total of 360 points. Exceptions exist for soldiers on permanent profiles who cannot perform specific events (like the run), who may be authorized alternate aerobic events like rowing, swimming, or biking.
