What is Superscoring?

Standard scoring looks at a single Saturday morning. If you had a great Math day but a terrible Reading day, your composite suffers.
Superscoring cherry-picks your victories.

**How it Works:**
Imagine you took the ACT three times:
- **April:** English 28, **Math 32**, Reading 26, Science 25 (Composite: 28)
- **June:** **English 31**, Math 29, Reading 28, Science 26 (Composite: 29)
- **September:** English 29, Math 30, **Reading 33**, **Science 30** (Composite: 31)

A standard review sees your highest score as a 31.
But a **Superscore** takes the bolded numbers:
English 31 + Math 32 + Reading 33 + Science 30 = 126.
126 / 4 = **31.5**, which rounds up to a **32**.
Congratulations! You are now a 32-scoring applicant.

Do Colleges Accept This?

YES. The vast majority of US colleges and universities now accept superscores.
**Why?**
1. It helps them report higher average scores for their rankings (US News & World Report).
2. It is seen as a fairer metric of a student's true capability.

**Exceptions:**
Some schools still require "Single Sitting" scores. Always check the admissions website of specific universities, especially public university systems which can be slower to adopt new policies.

Strategic Retaking

Understanding superscoring changes your study strategy.
If you already have a 34 in Math and Science, but a 24 in Reading, you don't need to study Math anymore.
On your next test date, you can literally sleep through the Math section (not recommended, but theoretically possible) and focus 100% of your brainpower on Reading. Even if your composite for that day drops, your **Superscore** will rise if your Reading score improves.

Official ACT Superscoring

The ACT organization itself now supports superscoring. When you send score reports, they automatically calculate and send your superscore to colleges that accept it. This removes the manual work and ensures your best self is presented to admissions officers.
